2nd AFRICAN CONGRESS ON STUTTERING I t is estimated that 1% of the world's population is affected by stuttering. That is approximately 60 million! At least 8 million are from Africa. In Africa, most of the information about stuttering is related to folk ideas and many people use dangerous methods to try to treat stuttering. In most African nations there is no speech therapy service available. |

Many children and adults in Africa are stigmatized and socially isolated because of stuttering It's time to make a change
The conference is organized by the association Action Contre le Begaiement (ACB) (the local stuttering association - http://ouaga2008.ifrance.com/) with the support of the International Stuttering Association (ISA) (http://www.stutterisa.org). To be successful, funding is essential, because in Africa most people who stutter simply cannot afford the transportation costs to Ouagadougou or the expense of housing (etc.) while at the conference. Besides helping to scholarship delegates from African nations, there are several other potential events we will need to raise funds for including a welcome reception, dinner and/or speaker costs. The African conference will be an important way for people from many African nations to "join hands." Important networking opportunities and collaborations play an important role in the work being done throughout Africa for people who stutter.
Together we can make a difference.
